The record breaking 2017 sugar beet harvest got off to a great start Tuesday, Sept. 5, according to Craig Spencer, Western Sugar Cooperative Agriculturist for the Torrington area. Plans call for 1,000 ton deliveries for the first five days at Torrington, with 4,000 T/day at Scottsbluff, and 1-2,000 T/day from out of the area. Re-haul trucks are coming from Big Springs, Neb., fields. Final root samples before harvest gave an estimate of 32.6 tons per acre, with 18 percent sugar. Processing is expected to continue into February 2018.
