2020 has been a tough year. Everybody knows it, we don’t have to discuss it. But 2021 is going to be amazing. It’s going to be a year when things happen that you never thought would happen. The impossible will become possible, so you’d better dream big. How do I know? Because pigs are flying!
It seems that in China, the African swine fever wiped out so many hog herds that they are now importing hogs from other countries. In 2020, over 15,000 live pigs worth over $30 million were imported to help ease the pork shortage, with more planned.
So with all these pigs flying, the sky’s the limit for the things that may happen this year! In fact, here are some of the things that are already in the pipeline that might actually become part of everyday life!
Smart bricks. Researchers have found a way to take plain old red bricks and turn them into “supercapacitors”. They put a special coating on the bricks which soaks in and turned them into energy storing electrodes. So a pile of bricks could actually become a pile of super-efficient energy storage.
If you think the bricks are smart, wait till you hear about the concrete. Researchers have found a way to make concrete that will actually heal itself when it gets cracks. It’s made out of sand, gel and bacteria and is known as “living concrete”.
Whether you’re an athlete or a slug, you might want to keep an eye on your ticker. Now there is a T-shirt that does that for you. A regular cotton T-shirt has a single-lead ECG printed into the fabric. It measures heartbeats, including irregular beats, and uploads the information to the cloud by Bluetooth.
Self-Driving Trucks. Supposedly, driverless trucks are cheaper to run than regular trucks, more efficient since they never need to take a pit-stop, and can be programmed to run in convoys nose-to-tail to cut down on wind resistance. However, researchers say that they would still need a human passenger to keep an eye on the freight.
You see? Amazing things are getting ready to happen! People are coming up with things even science fiction couldn’t imagine. So in this new year, put on your thinking caps and be ready to try something new, something amazing and maybe even something weird.
Because you never know what will happen when pigs fly.
