GERING, Neb. – The sixth annual WESTCO Producers Conference is set for Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Gering Civic Center. The event will start at 9 a.m. and adjourn at 2 p.m.
This year features a stellar lineup of informative speakers and quality entertainment. The morning speakers include Dr. Greg McKee, professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Darin Newsom, a markets expert. After lunch Curtis “The Mentalist” Waltermire is set to perform.
Dr. McKee received his BA from BYU and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in Agricultural and Resource Economics. He is currently a Professor of Ag Economics and the Agricultural and Rural Cooperatives Specialist at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Topics of interest largely focus on cooperatives including performance, management, marketing activities, contracting and vertical integration in agriculture and agribusiness, and changes in the mechanism used by agribusiness to establish relationships with their customer base. He teaches courses in cooperative business management and in agribusiness industrial strategy. Research projects have been supported by the USDA-ERS, and a variety of cooperative business organizations.
Newsom has 30 years’ experience analyzing commodity markets – covering grains and oilseeds, livestock, energies, metals and understanding the different characteristics of each. He has appeared on numerous financial television programs to talk markets and is a regular analyst on the Iowa Public Television program “Market to Market.” He is a market columnist and technical analyst blogger, whose work has been featured on websites and in magazines for decades. Newsom is well known, speaking internationally and providing his unique analytical observations and years of experience on market outlook and how markets work in an entertaining and informative manner.
