LINCOLN, Neb. – Governor Pete Ricketts and Senator John Murante this week announced the introduction of LB 1009, which will streamline and right-size speed limits for the citizens of Nebraska across the State.
“This announcement continues our commitment to modernizing our state’s infrastructure network to grow our state,” said Governor Ricketts. “Senator Murante’s bill allows the Department of Transportation to systematically evaluate appropriate speed limits to meet the needs of Nebraskans. This approach to speed limits addresses the many concerns we’ve heard about inconsistencies with the current system. I appreciate the work of Senator Murante and the many legislators who have supported making common sense improvements to our transportation system.”
LB 1009 provides for a streamlined approach to speed limits, especially for our rural highways. This bill will allow for more consistent speed limits by setting them at 65 mph on rural highways. Additionally, it will raise speed limits on expressways and potential future super-2 highways to 70 mph. Lastly, it will provide for the Department of Transportation with the ability to study Interstate 80 and evaluate for potential speed limit increases.
“This proposal will help create great predictability for Nebraskans as they travel the state especially in our rural areas,” said Senator Murante. “Thank you to Governor Ricketts and the Nebraska Department of Transportation for partnering with my office on this legislation.”
“This bill will allow us to approach how we set speed limits using practical methods that align with driver expectations,” said NDOT Director Kyle Schneweis. “We hear from the citizens of Nebraska about speed limits on a regular basis. This provides us the tools to bring uniformity to our state’s transportation network while still considering the factors that influence speeds, such as roadway hills, curves, and shoulder widths. NDOT is committed to working with local leaders to set the appropriate speed limits when state highways enter and pass through Nebraska communities.”
